The correct heat rating is the most important factor when choosing a spark plug. A spark plug that is too hot may result in engine damage, under certain conditions, and a spark plug that is too cold can cause the plug to constantly clog. It is therefore important to use the same heat rating as the original plug for untuned motors. For sport and racing engines it is advisable to use a somewhat colder plug.
